In 1996, Michael put together in Santa Cruz, CA his first Satriani-esque Progressive Rock Fusion band named Xibition. The fully
orchestrated three lead guitar version of the band recorded a home grown CD,
performed a live
showcase at
the "Cactus
Club" in San Jose, CA, at "Moe's Alley" in
Santa Cruz,
CA., and at the "Boulder Creek Art,
Wine & Music Festival". Later, a two lead guitar version of the
band played once more at "Moe's Alley" plus four extremely cool gigs in Santa Cruz, CA area which were
gatherings of local musicians set up for networking, talent exposure, and
auditioning for local venues.
(1996-2000) Santa Cruz Xibition Musicians: • Michael Hopkins (Carvin 24 fret, early 80's Sequential Circuits Pro-One synthesizer, mid 80's DX 21 synth/E-Mu module) • Forrest Foster (7 string Ibanez guitar, recording engineer) • Kent McMasters (Electric guitar, keyboards, vocals) • Todd McMasters (6 string Carvin bass,vocals) • Marty Olander (drums, vocals) • Steve Ratcliff (6 string Carvin fretted bass, 6 string Carvin fretless bass, Chapman Stick, vocals). Steve went on to record/perform with the San Jose band "Trip Device", GarageBand review=Trip Device, CD Baby=Trip Device cd 1, CD Baby= Trip Device cd 2. Shortly after moving to San Diego, CA in 2001, Michael put together a second Progressive
Fusion Rock band named Newer Signs, they have performed att"Dreamstreet"
in Ocean Beach, CA, and at "The Metaphor Cafe" in Escondido, CA.
(2002-2005) San Diego Newer Signs Musicians: • Michael Hopkins (Carvin 24 fret, Roland XP-10 keys/synth, Starr Labs ZTAR) • Tom Daly (Roland Electronic drums) • Larry Pasovad (Bass) • Stephen Kamada (Stratocaster). A year and a half after joining "Newer Signs" Stephen went up to Los Angeles, CA to attend the Guitar Institute of Technology, recently graduated and is now enjoying performing live with his band "Syndicate" and recording within the Hollywood, CA. music community.
